How to Make a Pet Emergency Preparedness Kit

When an emergency strikes, it’s important that you and your family are ready for anything. Having all the essentials your pet could need ready to go in the event of a disaster can give you peace of mind. You can purchase premade Emergency kits, but you can also assemble your own! Here’s a checklist of everything you’ll need to make sure you have a fully stocked go-bag for your pet.

The Basics:

☐ Water
☐ Food
Vaccination papers
Photocopied registration information (ex: proof of ownership or adoption records)
Pet licensing information and ID tag
Microchip information
Important phone numbers (vet, emergency contact)
☐ Collar
Leash or pet carrier
Kitty litter or waste bags
☐ Whistle

First-aid Supplies:

☐ Self-cling bandage (bandage that stretches and sticks to itself but not to fur)
☐ Absorbent gauze pads, cotton balls or swabs
Adhesive tape
☐ Scissors (with blunt ends)
Antiseptic wipes
☐ Sterile saline solution
Hydrogen peroxide (to induce vomiting in the event of poisoning, as directed by a vet)
☐ Ice pack
☐ Disposable gloves
Thermometer (your pet’s temperature should not rise above 103°F or fall below 100°F)
Sterile non-stick gauze pads for bandages
☐ Tick remover

Other Helpful Things That to Have:

☐ Some toys/blankets that make your pet feel safe and secure
☐ Flea, Tick and mosquito treatment
☐ A supply of heartworm medication
☐ Ear and eye cleaning solution
☐ A pillowcase or cloth bag to confine your cat for treatment
☐ Benadryl – If your pet has allergies your vet can recommend an appropriate dosage to help with inflammation
Glucose paste or corn syrup if you have a diabetic pet
☐ Nail clippers
☐ Antibiotic ointment like Polysporin
☐ Flashlight
☐ Rubbing alcohol
☐ Splints and tongue depressors
☐ Styptic powder or pencil to help stop minor bleeds
☐ Towels, paper towels or training pads
